Dear fellow music lover,
The artists are booked, the piano hire is confirmed, the dates are in Rook Lane Chapel’s diary and the leaflets are back from the printer! Yes, Frome Concerts Group is up and running and we are looking forward so much to seeing you all again in September.
Our star attraction is Clare Hammond. Some of you may have heard her play in a stunning concert at Cooper Hall a few years ago. She has chosen a very beautiful programme for us - but if you can’t wait until her concert here you can catch her performance at this year’s BBC Proms on Sunday 8 September on Radio 3.
We are very grateful to The Countess of Munster Musical Trust for sponsoring the first concert. Each year the trustees select outstanding performers to join their recital scheme and we have invited one of them, Siping Guo, to play for us. This will be among Siping’s final UK concerts as he will be taking up the prestigious position of Principal Bassoon for the Singapore Symphony orchestra a week after his visit to Frome.
Several of you have asked if we could book Red Priest for one of our concerts. This has not been possible, but their leader, the virtuoso recorder player, Piers Adams, is coming with keyboard player, Lyndy Mayle in his new duo, Baroque Alchemy. The programme dates (mostly) from the baroque era but the keyboard is electronic! Piers is a wonderful musician and a charismatic performer so we are expecting a very exciting concert including music which ranges - in Piers’ words from the authentic reproduction of acoustic instruments to space-age sound worlds of which the composers could only have dreamed.
With our final concert we are back in more familiar territory. We were very impressed by Ross Morris’s performances on line and he certainly comes with rave reviews. Don’t miss his concert of beautiful guitar music old and new on 24 November.
Booking for subscriptions opens on Friday 9 August. As usual we delay opening booking for individual concerts so that you, our loyal subscribers, can book first. Tickets for single concerts will be on sale on Monday 26 August. After that date, if one of the single concerts sells out, subscriptions will no longer be available. Don’t miss out - book now!
With best wishes,
Mary and the FCG Committee, Clive, Diana, Edith, Natalie, Rhona and Sarah
